Our Term 3 PD day and AGM was held on Saturday 29th August at Palmerston North Intermediate Normal. Thank you to Judine for hosting us in your lovely library.
This was a great chance to catch up and network with other librarians. Of our 12 attendees, 4 came down from Napier and 1 traveled all the way over from New Plymouth - Awesome! We started the morning with our AGM. We easily reached our Quorum of 10% of our membership base. This was followed by the Stocktaking session which was presented by Miriam. A huge thanks to Steph E for creating the PowerPoint presentation. There were a number of good points and issues raised which led to a number of really interesting conversations. Sandi led a hands-on reporting workshop using the free Easel.ly visual platform. This is very straightforward to use and generates some amazing visual reports for your school management, or for your students to use to present their own information. Oh yes, and we have to make special mention of the BOUNTIFUL Morning tea that was provided. A-Ma-Zing! :-) We followed up our PD morning by having a lovely lunch in Palmy. A great opportunity to continue our networking.

Attention SLANZA Central members
The 2015 SLANZA Central AGM will be held at 10am on Saturday 29th August, at Palmerston North Intermediate School in Palmerston North, during the SLANZA PD day. Please send any apologies for the AGM to [email protected] before Friday 28th August. SLANZA Central region committee wants to be able to do more for and reach a greater number of people in our region - but we need help. Given our large geographic area it is difficult for us to organise events throughout the region and reach our entire membership. We think you could help solve this problem for us. We would like you to become a committee member.
Benefits to being part of the Central committee:
Being on the committee is easier than you might think:
If you are interested in becoming a member of the SLANZA Central committee and would like to attend our next meeting to see what it is all about contact Sandi Faulconbridge at [email protected] Alternatively, you can contact any of the committee members with questions or expressions of interest: Sandi Faulconbridge (Chairperson), Taradale Primary School, Napier [email protected] Miriam Tuohy - SLANZA President (Secretary), Palmerston North Girls’ High School, Palmerston North [email protected] Karen Carswell, Woodford House, Napier [email protected] Sasha Eastwood, Manchester St School, Fielding [email protected] Stephanie Ellis, Napier Boys’ High School, Napier [email protected] Judine Knowles, Palmerston North Intermediate Normal School, Palmerston North [email protected] Maree Paterson, Reignier School, Napier [email protected] We look forward to hearing from you! Congratulations to Vickie Clarke of William Colenso College, Napier. She is the recipient of the Central regions conference grant. A big WooHoo to you!
We look forward to seeing you at conference, and hearing all about your experience in the next issue of Collected magazine. Central regions Term 2 event was a Publishers evening kindly hosted once again by Paper Plus Palmerston North. This was held on Thursday 18th June. Attendees got the opportunity to network, shop for books and listen to the two publisher’s representatives, who came up from Wellington for the event, discuss all things trending, new and upcoming in the book industry. Attendees also went home with a number of free books each.
Our Term 1 PD day - Creative Commons & Referencing 101 - was held on Wednesday 1st April after school, with the intention that teaching staff and library staff would be able to attend. Thank you to Michelle at Tamatea High for kindly hosting this event. We were able to get Matt McGregor of Creative Commons to include Napier in their countrywide CC Roadshow. This had a school-based focus, with special note on issues particular to school libraries.
There were 3 presentations:
The 'Referencing 101' presentation has been uploaded to our G+ community. This is just a quick reminder to let you know there are meetings being held for SLANZA Central members this week and next to discuss the National Library curriculum services changes. Please see the flyer below with dates, times and venues listed.
This is your chance to provide feedback, ask questions etc that the SLANZA National Executive can pass on to National Library staff at our next meeting which is next month. Please come along and let your voice be heard. You may have come up with a question, query or solution that others didn't think of, but that is relevant to many of us. On November 1st, we held our Term 4 PD event at Wanganui Intermediate, with special guests Jan Watts and Debbie Roxburgh. The morning’s learning covered several topics: weeding your library, promoting your library, and running a Summer Reading programme. Resources shared that morning can be found here:
The Central committee members are already planning events for Term 1 and further into 2015, which we hope to be able to run throughout the region. Our event this term is an evening hosted at Paper Plus Palmerston North, with representatives from Allen & Unwin, Walker, Harper Collins, Macmillan, and Penguin Books. Full details are in the PDF below. Please RSVP to either Miriam Tuohy, or Victoria at Paper Plus by Friday 8 August. ![]()
