Dear SLANZA MEMBERS
Over the last 6 months the SLANZA National Executive have been in conversation with The Department of Internal Affairs via the National Library to secure some funding to grow the school library sector. We have had 4 proposals accepted and we are now in the process of shaping those into a position of delivery. Each proposal aligns us with a collaborative partner and together we will ensure we can contribute some meaningful new initiatives into our school library sector. The four proposals accepted include two pilot programmes- one to support the training of School Librarians to be involved as contributors to the Many Answers, Any Questions platform operated by National Libraries Services to schools. The second pilot programme is to include a school librarian into a Community of Learning/ Kahui Ako – this will include setting up Professional Learning Groups in that CoL and being involved in that CoLs Enquiry Learning programme. This will mean that some schools with part time librarians on minimal hours can have the support and nurture of others in their profession- and hopefully gaining meaningful knowledge and expertise through this process. Another accepted proposal is some significant funding to enable our school librarians to access tertiary training at Certificate, Diploma, Bachelor levels. We also hope this will include a possibility of some post graduate research into school libraries as imperative to literacy outcomes, NCEA results and overall wellbeing of our students. We are working with LIANZA as co-partners. The last is working beside Tohatoha to enable the amazing mahi they do to be more accessible to school libraries around Aotearoa. This link introduces you to the Glass Room project we hope can go to more schools in our nation. https://www.tohatoha.org.nz/2020/11/exhibition-exploring-online-misinformation-set-to-tour-nz/ More information will be released as we are able to do so. We just want our members to know what we have been doing on your behalf and we hope these proposals all enhance the mana of our school libraries and the work we do in them. These are exciting days for SLANZA as we also are nearly through the interview process for the research that the Ministry of Education are conducting to find our best practice libraries and how they operate, what their kaupapa is and how they are supported by the wider school community. This research will be used to advocate to Boards and Principals about how they can work towards creating flourishing impactive libraries as best practice models. So with our work with Department of Internal Affairs- National Library and the Ministry of Education SLANZA has become a respected needed voice for not only advocating for our school libraries but creating meaningful work to enhance and promote them. Thank you to all our members for your continued support Ma te wa Hi all Just a few things to keep you in the loop of SLANZA doings… SCHOOL LIBRARIES TRANSFORM- Our campaign is quietly doing its business and although you may not see or hear about it- it is working. We have had great outcomes with the MoE, far better connections and opportunities with our partner organizations, articles published in well regarded magazines, and shortly we have regional trainings coming up with the Campaign theme as a base! Keep up the talk, keep us informed, don’t let your school library lose its impact by the loss of funds, time or space that weigh over you! We matter because our kids do! Don’t forget we have our conference coming up in October- I can’t wait- the speakers look amazing – (Shannon Hale) and some of the workshops have me bristling with curiosity. Hopefully the work we are doing with the MoE will be ready to share with you at Conference as well and that is going to be so exciting as we highlight 12 of our libraries in Aotearoa schools and see what they are doing, how they do it and why they are flourishing. The feedback from this is going to impact hugely how we move forward with our campaign- especially as we lobby principals and Board of Trustees. https://innovators.eventsair.com/slanza-2021/ is the link to Conference- GO!!!! Conference is the just the best way to grow as a school librarian- the conversation you have- the feeling of being in a meaningful community- and just being encouraged by being with people who share your passion about your mahi- it is so empowering! We also will have SLANZA Awards to celebrate our successful school libraries and librarians, a birthday party for our 21st and our AGM! http://www.slanza.org.nz/awards.html is our awards page- nominate someone who deserves the recognition. Soon the new Collected is coming out- I can’t wait- it hits up some of the issues we face and focuses on the School Library Transforms Campaign. It also has amazing articles by our business sponsors for this year and I know some of them are interesting pieces! An article about our Campaign has been published in Principal Today – check it out – here is the link https://issuu.com/magazinestoday/docs/pt130/22 It was awesome to see three current NE members and a past president in the training loop with NZEI to interview school librarians for our Pay equity talks! It is awesome we are moving on this now. Clare has put together a new training module- SLANZA Module #17: Gender and Sexuality in School Libraries. After one day- we are nearly at a full contingent of trainees, we think we will offer this again in the year! We also have been doing some great work trying to access some funding to pilot some amazing new programmes- hopefully in the next few months we have exciting things to share with you all about this! This might sound vague and for now it has to be- but if we can get these across the line- WOW!!! SLANZA is working hard to do all we can we support you from the inside and protect and grow you from the outside. If you are not a member- please join us- we need your help to do what we do! We are having an NE meeting on Wednesday- let us know if there is anything you want us to discuss! Let us know how you plan to celebrate Pink Shirt Day in your library + win!
Pink Shirt Day on Friday 21 May 2021 is about working together to stop bullying by celebrating diversity and promoting positive social relationships. Led by the Mental Health Foundation with support from InsideOUT, the Peace Foundation, New Zealand Post Primary Teachers’ Association (PPTA), Youthline, Te Kaha O Te Rangatahi Trust, the Human Rights Commission, Bullying-Free NZ Week, Cook Islands Development Agency, and Pacific Business Trust. Website https://www.pinkshirtday.org.nz/ As part of our campaign, we produce a Good Reads feature https://www.pinkshirtday.org.nz/good-reads/ which includes reviews of books for children and young adults with bullying prevention themes. We had another great response to our Facebook call out for reviewers and have now added this fresh content. All of the reviews can be downloaded to print, making them a dream for your book display planning for the week. Our campaign survey showed that 30% of those surveyed used the reviews as part of their celebrations, with most of them noting they would also refer to them throughout the year when looking for book reviews on topics like anxiety, bullying, feeling different and resiliency. We would love to see what libraries around New Zealand are doing for the week! Send in photos of your displays or activities to [email protected] by Friday 28 May and you will go in the draw for a $50 countdown gift card (that would make a great morning tea treat for staff!). 2021 is now a real thing, I haven't written the date down much until last week when I started work. The year had started with a big boom as I look at my school "to do" list. It is massive. I love the African proverb which is a bit un PC but as I look at my little china elephant my mum gave me and is in on my desk, I ask it's forgiveness.. "You can only eat an elephant one bite at a time". It is true, one job at one time, bit by bit, we will get the mahi done. I hope most of you have come back with budgets approved and hours secure. Please let me know if you have had any surprises with the opposite happening, and if you need support if you have experienced any reductions, SLANZA is here to journey with you. Let us know. This year is conference year in Wellington, and I can't wait to gather again. We have a big celebration of our 21st birthday and so much amazing PD to enjoy. Best of all.... We will be together. School Libraries Transform will be centre of the year as we continue to hustle to protect our school libraries, as we advocate, as we listen, as we talk. Our first online PD for the year will be a repeat of the School Libraries Transform course we ran last year and were over subscribed! Sign up if you want the kaupapa and knowledge of what this is all about. We are working very closely with the Ministry of Education regarding our story and our campaign has been the conjoint for this. We are working in a great research project with them together, the first time in SLANZA history. We hope it makes a genuine difference in keeping our libraries safe. We wish you a good year, go to your regional PD days, our one in Waikato/BOP in March is going to be stunning, we have the newest Margaret Mahy award recipient speaking!! Join up to SLANZA, get involved, and help us all become amazing at supporting our tamariki's learning and literacy journeys. I believe in school libraries, not because it is a job that is school hours and has long holidays, no, I am a school librarian because I know we can make a difference to the lives of children and staff. We can impact our people for good, we can together give some hope, confidence, meaning and reason to the communities we work in. That is what drives me, and I want to be the best I can at that.
